🌌 Planet
This week the world hit 8 Billion and the first network-nation experiment is underway, applying concepts from The Network State by Balaji Srinivasan (required reading for S3T members because - who knows?).
COP27 Climate Conference Outcomes
The UN's COP27 (aka Conference Of the Parties) wrapped up this week with a 5 year tech innovation plan to support climate stabilization, and a surprise breakthrough agreement to set up a "loss and damages" fund where:
- Rich polluting nations contribute to the fund based on their culpability for climate change per this study (see explainer).
- Developing nations impacted by climate change events: floods, droughts etc use the funds to aid recovery efforts.
Developing nations made this agreement top priority for COP27, but the US and EU had long sought to avoid the topic.
More encouraging news
Conventional wisdom has long held that economic growth and environmental protections are mutually exclusive and exist at each other's expense.
This is proving to be a false tradeoff: More than 25 countries have broken out of the false tradeoff of environment vs economic growth, demonstrating how to have both.
Talent
ClimateTech is leaning in to hire the ~100k tech workers laid off this year:
- Climatebase is a job board (and company directory) focused on climate centric jobs and employers.
- Terra.do a community for helping tech workers connect with the climate tech needs and opportunities.
- Climate Draft is a new hub for helping displaced tech workers transition into climate careers.
- Climateperks.com incentivizes climate friendly travel (taking trains, boats, buses) by enabling companies to give employee's "Journey Days" (time for the slower travel).
